Farewell Joe Louis Arena My Last Red Wings Hockey Game – Bitter sweet as The Detroit Red Wings need a new home, but we are talking about The JOE! The Joe is the Oldest Arena in the NHL!
The Joe is located in one of the BEST cities in the world, Detroit. Right on the Detroit River, Joe Louis Arena, named after Champion boxer Joe Louis, hosted its first Hockey Game in 1979 and has been a land mark ever since. Of course My Home Team!
Located at 19 Steve Yzerman Drive…
I have walked these steps as a kid, and now an an adult walking them One Last Time has brought back all the GOOD memories. The steps where painted for the 2016-2017 “Farewell Season at the Joe” and that marked the first time the Red Wings have transformed the stairs. A great touch!
My last Red Wings game at the Joe…So many choices in Jerseys I have hanging up, which one, what player? This was going to be my last time at the Joe and wanted to represent my way!
If I’m walking the Joe steps one last time, then #28 Brian Rafalsky USA Hockey Jersey it is! I followed Brian through his career, especially when he represented the GREAT USA in the Olympics and he is my fave, along side…(see I was going to list them, but that would take too long to write and too long to read).

Walking into Joe Louis is always my favorite part. The doors open and you have the frenzy of all the Great Red Wing fans filing in, with the smell of Championship Hockey, Food and that Old Smell you can only get from the Joe. Seeing the Octopus staring you in the eyes is a sight that never gets old.
Once inside, it’s time to mingle with the local folks and catch up with old friends. Must take some time to shop for that game souvenir, from Pucks, Jerseys or anything Wings!
The Joe was home to some of the Greats of the game and the story and statues are displayed throughout the Joe. My great grandfather played for the wings in the later 20 – 30’s, and being that my Blood is RED, I love all the history that goes with the Joe and the Red Wings.
The Glass Case…
Division championships, Stanley Cups some that I did not see and some I did! No greater feeling than to know your Red Wings have WON more Stanley Cups Championships of any NHL franchise in the USA!
One of the OLD SCHOOL Arenas with no glitz or glamour, just a Detroit welcome Joe Louis Style! Man I’m going to miss The Joe.
One of my favorite games that I can remember. Maybe because I got to share all my stories and memories with Rebecca. Maybe it was watching Rebecca have the time of her life at the Joe. Maybe it was sharing my last moment watching my Wings with my Best Friend!
My last time sitting in that Joe Louis Arena seat…I bet this seat and all the others have stories of their own to tell. If seats could only talk, WOW that would be fun!
Who can watch a game without a Sausage dog smothered in mustard with peppers and onions! Come on my last one at the Joe, this is getting real!
Watching Jimmy Howard bring the Red Wings to another Victory in Sudden Death was the icing on the Cake! Cherished every minute, every goal, every save and every game! I can remember watching Tim Cheveldae, Mike Vernon, Dominik Hasek and of course our family fave Chris Osgood on that side of the ice and a picture I will never forget!
Walking out of the Joe for the last time with my Fellow Wings Brothers and Sisters is what I will hold on to until I die! As we took our slow walk down the stairs and turned around to say goodbye to an old friend, we quickly made our usual fast paced walk through the Cobo Center to catch our Bus before the crowds! I still have the fast exit down pat, and will now have to learn a new one at the Little Caesars Arena!
Cheers to you Joe Louis Arena and our Champions The Red Wings! Cheers to all the memories my family and I have had for over 30 years of watching our favorite team at the Joe! Cheers to my Last Detroit Red Wings game at the Joe! Cheers to more memories, more championships and more Red Wing Hockey at Little Caesars Arena!
